Adrian “Afie” Schelling
Adrian “Afie” Schelling, of Twin Falls, Idaho, passed away on April 3, 2026, at the age of 87.
Adrian, known as “Afie,” was born in Sioux City, Iowa, to Henry and Josena Schelling and was raised in a close-knit family where faith, hard work, and devotion to family were guiding values throughout his life.
Afie’s early years were shaped by resilience and determination. His father moved to Long Beach, California, where he worked as a longshoreman to support the family. Once established, he brought the family west by train during World War II, when shades were kept drawn at night as a precaution of the time. The family later settled in Cypress, California, then a rural farming community surrounded by orange groves. In elementary school, Afie and several other children were reminded by their teacher to wear shoes to class—cause times were tough in those days.
At the age of 18, Afie joined the United States Army, serving for two years. He was stationed in Texas and later sent to Florida, where he was part of the Cuban Missile Crisis.
Afie was a man of quiet strength and steady presence. He owned and operated a dairy for many years and took great pride in his work. He was deeply devoted to his family and insisted his parents move from California to Idaho so he could care for them as they grew older. Afie never married, and his life was rooted in responsibility, loyalty, and the love he gave to those closest to him.
He also enjoyed travel and adventure. Afie journeyed across much of the country in his trailer, driving the Alaska Highway and traveling as far as New York and Florida. One of his treasured memories was deep-sea fishing with his brother-in-law, Pete Van Dyk, and he especially loved taking his nephews along on those trips.
Afie was known for his independent spirit, a dry sense of humor, and he could be a little ornery at times, but those who knew him best understood his heart and how much he loved his family.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Josena Schelling; his brothers, Duke Schelling and Kenneth Schelling; and his sister, Marie Van Dyk.
He is survived by his younger sister, Annie Bethke, along with extended family and loved ones.
Afie will be deeply missed by his family and all who knew him.
A graveside service will be held Wednesday, April 8, at 12:00 noon at the Jerome Cemetery.
