Lloyd Lewis

Lloyd B. Lewis, beloved Father, Grandfather, and Great Grandfather, Age 101, of Boise, Idaho went to Heaven on September 28, 2019.  Lloyd was born July 25, 1918, in Campbell, Arkansas, to Isaac Lewis and Hattie Cooper Lewis.  He was the youngest of ten children.  Lloyd grew up on the family farm and when he was sixteen, the farm was sold and he moved with his parents to Leslie, Arkansas.  There he met Mildred Sutterfield, the love of his life, and they were married on December 23, 1939 in the Searcy County Courthouse in Marshall, Arkansas.  They were married for 59 years.

Lloyd only completed the 8th Grade but graduated from the School of Common Sense and Determination.   Lloyd was very proud of his Ozark Mountain hillbilly heritage and often spoke about the amazing things he had seen in his 101 years.  He went from the ox cart to a man on the moon.

He was drafted into the United States Army during World War II and achieved the rank of Staff Sargent.  After the war, Lloyd returned to Leslie where he went to work for the rail road.  In 1948, he and Mildred moved to Twin Falls, Idaho to be near Mildred’s family.  After building a home, Lloyd went to work for the Union Pacific Railroad as a “gandy dancer”.  He later became a motorcar track patrolman and truck driver retiring in October, 1978.

Following 12 years of marriage, Lloyd and Mildred started their family with the birth of their daughter Jane.  A couple of years later their daughter Joyce was born.  The family had many great times together.  Upon Lloyd’s retirement in 1978, fishing and camping became their passion.  Lots of time was spent on the banks of Magic and Roseworth Reservoirs as well as Salmon Dam.  Lloyd taught many kids that spitting on the bait was the best way to catch fish.

Lloyd was an active member of the Victory Missionary Baptist Church in Twin Falls, Idaho, and served as a deacon and Sunday school teacher for many years.  He later attended Grace Baptist Church and became known as “the candy man” as he always treated the children of the church with candy every Sunday.   One of his favorite scriptures says, “The fool hath said in his heart there is no God…”, and he wrote in his Bible, “I may be dumb, but I’m no fool.”

In 1993, Lloyd and Mildred moved into their dream home in Kimberly, Idaho.   After Mildred’s death in 1999, Lloyd continued to reside in this home learning how to cook, clean, and do his own laundry.  His family lovingly called him “Chef BoyarLloyd” because of the many cookies, cakes, pies, and trifles that he created.  His daughters even had co-workers requesting his special cookies.  Lloyd sold his home in Kimberly in 2013 and moved to Boise where he lived with his daughter Jane and son-in-law Ken.  Later in 2017, he moved into Grace Independent and Assisted Living just a few blocks from Jane and Ken’s home.  Lloyd made many friends amongst the staff and residents and also became known there as “the candy man” providing treats to all.  He celebrated his 100th birthday at the residence with over 150 people attending. 

Lloyd was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers, four sisters, several nieces and nephews, and his beloved wife, Mildred.  He was also preceded in death by all of his sister’s and brother’s- in- law.  Lloyd is survived by his daughter Jane (Ken) Smith, Boise, ID; daughter Joyce (Bruce) Earl, Kimberly, ID; Grandson Richard Earl, Molalla, OR; Granddaughter Jennifer Rogers (Chris Dyer), Boise, ID; Granddaughter Chelsey (Nichole) Piet, Boise, ID; Great Grandchildren Amity Rogers, Isaac Rogers, and Nicholas Piet, Boise, ID; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A Celebration of Life is scheduled for 11:00 am, Thursday, October 3, 2019, at Rosenau Funeral Home and Crematory,  2826 Addison Ave E, Twin Falls, ID 83301.  Interment to follow at Sunset Memorial Park Cemetery.
