Michael “Bruce” Futrell was born in Twin Falls, Idaho, on January 23, 1949. He grew up just down the road in Buhl, Idaho. A proud Buhl High School Indian, Bruce made his mark both on the football field and as becoming all-state wrestler, proving that grit and determination ran deep, even back then. Bruce was on his own from the young age 14. When he wasn’t competing, he could be found washing dishes at a local cafe or working long hours in the farm fields around the Magic Valley for his rent, learning early the value of hard work and responsibility.
After graduation, Bruce answered the call to serve and joined the United States Marine Corps. He bravely served during the Vietnam War, where his courage earned him a Purple Heart among many other honors. True to Marine form, Bruce never backed down from a challenge, whether it was in battle or in life.
Following his military service, Bruce traded combat boots for work boots, settling into civilian life as a dispatcher for D & D Trucking in Gooding. His no-nonsense attitude, quick wit, and strong work ethic made him a fixture at the company for many years.
When he wasn’t working, Bruce could almost always be found outdoors. He loved the green fairways of the golf course, the thrill of a snowmobile ride, and the peace of a good hunting trip. He fell in love with the Greys River area in Wyoming in recent years, where he spent cherished time with family. He especially loved side-by-side rides through the mountains and the countless shenanigans that always seemed to follow. If you know, you know.
Bruce was also a proud member of the Magic Valley H.O.G. (Harley Owners Group) motorcycle club, often participating in charity rides that combined his love for the open road with his generous spirit. Many evenings, he could be found sitting on his front porch, enjoying a cold one and good conversation with family and neighbors.
Above all else, Bruce’s greatest joy came from spending time with his son, Michael, and the people he loved most. Together, he and Michael built a lifetime of memories—whitewater rafting, cruising the open road on their Harleys, and sharing plenty of laughs (and probably a few tall tales) along the way. His love for family was unwavering, and if you knew Bruce, he considered you family too.
Bruce is survived by his son Michael Futrell and wife Dusty Futrell, his grandsons Kai Smoke, Aden Futrell, and Dawson Olsen, granddaughters Madison and husband Bradley Spencer, Ashlyn Olsen, and Aubry Olsen, great-grandchildren Zella Spencer and Amber Kennedy-Smoke, favorite niece Debbie and husband Ron Brown, and great-nieces Mckenzie Firth and Brittni Brown.
Bruce was tough as nails, funny as hell, and had a heart bigger than the Idaho sky. His family and friends will remember his humor, his loyalty, and the way he made everyone feel.
