Richard C. Luff passed away on August 25 at the age of 95, following a lengthy illness. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and great- great-grandfather. His absence will be keenly felt by those who knew him.
Richard was born in Hinsdale, Montana, on February 13, 1930, to Ervin and Ruby Luff. The challenges of the Great Depression led Ervin to move his family throughout northeastern Montana and southwestern Washington in search of work and farming opportunities. Eventually, the Luff family settled in Richfield, Idaho, where Richard spent his formative years.
Richard graduated from Richfield High School in 1950. He then joined the United States Navy later that year, responding to the escalation of the Korean conflict. At the completion of his service, he returned to Richfield, Idaho, and on May 7, 1954, married Jacquie Dayley. Together, they welcomed three sons: Kelvan, Kendall and Kimball.
Richard dedicated 31 years to a career with Mountain Bell and AT&T, retiring in 1986.
Richard was an avid hunter, fisherman and woodworker. He built his own rifles, reloaded ammunition and crafted furniture and cabinetry. Known as a handyman, he could repair and construct almost anything, often sharing his skills with his family, church, and community. Quick to offer assistance, Richard touched countless lives through his generosity and service. In recognition of their commitment to the community, Richard and Jacquie received the Kimberly Good Neighbor Award in 2000.
Richard's love for nature was evident in his enthusiasm for four-wheeling with Jacquie and their family throughout the mountains and hills of southern Idaho, exploring nearly every backroad in the region. He also enjoyed fishing, camping and hunting trips with loved ones.
A devoted member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Richard served in various callings, using his talents to enrich the lives of both youth and adults. Richard and Jacquie dedicated a decade of service at the Twin Falls, Idaho temple, continuing until Richard reached the age of 90.
Richard leaves behind a legacy of dedication, service, kindness and respect. He is survived by his spouse Jacquie L. (Dayley) Luff, a sister Donna (Doug) Kelley, a half-brother Fred (Janis) Petersen, sons Kelvan (Lynne), Kendall (Kathy) and Kimball (Kristie), 11 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great- grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents Ervin and Ruby Luff, stepfather Fred Petersen, sister Dorothy (Henry) Maestas, brothers Ervin and Robert (Mary) Luff, grandson Zackary Luff and great-grandson Alexander Luff.
A memorial service is scheduled for Saturday, September 6, at 11:00 am at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 222 Birch Street South, Kimberly, Idaho. Friends and family are invited to gather from 10:00-10:45 a.m. prior to the memorial service. Interment will be at the Oakley, Idaho cemetery.
