Victor George Calvin passed away on Sunday, July 27,2025, after a long and valiant fight against osteomyelitis. He passed peacefully at home with his wife of 58 years, Isabella Lazaro Calvin.
Victor was born April 25, 1946 in Miami, Florida to Leonard and Vicky Calvin. At the age of 3, they relocated to Las Vegas, NV where he graduated from Western High School in 1965. He earned a football scholarship to Taft College and then Weber State University and ultimately was called to play for the inaugural football team at UNLV where he was later inducted into the football Hall of Fame.
After graduating from UNLV, Victor taught school and coached football and wrestling at both Western High School and Clark High School. He became the first head football coach at Chaparral High School. In 1980 Victor founded Nevada Coffee Service, which he successfully operated for over thirty years.
After living, working and raising a family in Las Vegas for over 50 years, he and Isabella retired to Idaho where he took up the challenge of golf. As most ex-jocks know, the challenge often prevailed. His goal was simply to hit that one “WOW” shot every now and then while playing with his best friends Richard Lassiter and Eddie Cebulko.
If you knew Victor, you knew bravery and pride. His persistence, his stubbornness and his determination were absolutely unstoppable. To know him was to witness an inspiring power to overcome --- again and again and again. He faced it all head-on. He baffled doctors, friends, family, parents, teachers and colleagues. He did what he was told was impossible – repeatedly.
Above all he loved his family. His daughters Angie and Kelly brought him the tenderness he had never known in his young and wounded life. His girls were his blessings from above. And then he was blessed with three grandchildren, Maddie, Mikey and Izzy. He wanted them to have the toughness and resourcefulness to be dropped off anywhere on the planet and still find their way home. He always said Maddie will surprise us all in a very good way; and Mikey is and will continue to be an amazing and brilliant man who makes us all proud; and Izzy will challenge whatever comes her way with grit and persistence. In other words, at age seven she can negotiate like a seasoned litigator!
He was profoundly proud of his nephew Rick and his wife Elizabeth. They have worked hard and raised two amazing sons and knowing what humble beginnings Rick came from warmed his heart. Elizabeth and Rick you are a perfect match and he’ll be there in spirit at that beach retirement home someday.
Victor was preceded in death by his parents, Leonard and Vicky Calvin and his beloved sister Johanna Coop.
He is survived by his wife, Isabella; daughter Angie Olson and husband Jason; daughter Kelly Sharpe and husband Jason; grandchildren Madeline Yandric, Michael Yandric and Isabella Sharpe; nephew Rick Coop and wife Elizabeth and sons Ricky and William; sisters-in-law Sharon Trotter and husband Rick, and Roxanne Paulson and husband Gary; niece Jennifer Northey; nephews Beau Barnson and Steven Miller; and his best friends Richard and Carol Lassiter and Edward and Judy Cebulko.
He will be dearly missed tipping his hat to our neighborhood golfers and waving to wonderful neighbors while enjoying time on the deck in beautiful Jerome, ID.
Our family would like to extend a heartfelt thanks to Hospice Visions. The staff there became family to us. They walked beside us every step of the way even to his last breath. Their care was amazing, selfless, tireless and ever so kind. Choosing them for this journey was one of our greatest blessings.
